ICY DRIFT® – white groundcover rose – Meilland

ICY DRIFT® wraps your front garden in soft, snow-white blossoms, creating a low, spreading carpet that brightens even grey Dublin days with gentle light. Its dense, glossy foliage and naturally compact habit make it ideal where space is tight, yet you still want a graceful, “girly” cottage feel along a terrace or path. Specially bred for modern gardens, it shrugs off wet Irish weather and heavy showers, calmly coping with humidity-driven disease pressure that troubles fussier roses. Most faded flowers drop cleanly, so the plant stays neat with barely any maintenance, just simple seasonal feeding. Own-root plants settle in steadily, building strong roots in year one, fuller growth in year two, and a lush sheet of bloom by year three for lasting, dependable colour in family gardens.

Usage options

Target area Reasoning
Front garden groundcover for Irish cottage-style borders The low, spreading habit quickly knits into a dense white carpet that looks charming against stone walls and picket fences, ideal for small cottage front gardens with limited space and busy routines, perfectly suiting the beginner.
Edging along drives and garden paths Its naturally compact, well-behaved growth makes a tidy, low edging that softens hard paving without blocking views or needing constant clipping, an easy solution for the time-poor homeowner.
Low-maintenance family flower beds Good self-cleaning and low pruning needs keep beds looking fresh with minimal effort, so you can enjoy long months of white bloom while spending more weekend time relaxing than working, ideal for the busy.
Containers and large pots on terraces or balconies In a 40–50 litre or larger container, its spreading habit drapes beautifully over the rim, giving a soft, snowy cascade that suits city balconies and paved terraces where you want impact without complex care, perfect for the urban gardener.
Family play gardens with durable, long-lived planting Grown on its own roots, it builds strength year after year, recovering well if damaged and keeping a stable shape and display, a thoughtful, long-term choice for the practical planner.
Exposed gardens facing Atlantic breezes and frequent rain High disease resistance and reliable performance in cool, damp conditions mean clean foliage and flowers even when showers are frequent and summers are short, reassuring for the coastal owner.
Urban front gardens and pavement-side planting Its recognised toughness, heat and frost hardiness, and good tolerance of street conditions (light reflection, occasional dryness) make it well suited to kerbside beds and small city front gardens, pleasing the practical city-dweller.
Low-input park and communal planting schemes The combination of spreading groundcover habit, low feeding and pruning needs, and low disease susceptibility reduces maintenance rounds while still giving a refined, neat appearance, appreciated by the cost-conscious manager.

Styling ideas

  • Soft-Edge Border – Drift ICY DRIFT® in a loose line along a path, underplanted with spring bulbs for layered seasons of white – ideal for relaxed cottage-garden lovers.
  • White-on-Green – Mass-plant as a pure white carpet against deep green shrubs to highlight its crisp snow-white flowers – suited to homeowners seeking simple, calm structure.
  • Container Cascade – One or two plants spilling gently from a 50-litre terracotta pot by the front door – perfect for balcony and small-terrace gardeners.
  • Pastel Mix Bed – Thread ICY DRIFT® between pale pink roses and soft blue perennials for a romantic, “girly” cottage palette – attractive for fragrance-and-colour enthusiasts.
  • Neat Urban Strip – Use as a continuous strip along parking bays or pavements, interplanted with low grasses for movement – ideal for low-maintenance city-front plots.

Technical cultivar profile
Parameter Data
Name and registration Groundcover shrub rose, registered as MEIpicdevoj, marketed as ICY DRIFT® and Drift®; ARS exhibition name Icy Drift; part of the Drift® groundcover collection.

Awards and recognition Honoured as a Louisiana Super Plants Award selection in 2013, recognising its reliable performance, ornamental value and suitability for low-maintenance landscape use.
Growth and structural characteristics Low, spreading groundcover shrub, about 30–55 cm high and 55–90 cm wide, with dense, glossy mid-green foliage and moderate prickles, forming a compact, ground-hugging mat.
Flower morphology Clusters of small, double, cup-shaped blooms, typically 1–4 cm across with around 26–39 petals, flowering repeatedly with an especially plentiful second flush in season.
Colour data and phenology Pure, cool snow-white petals with subtle creamy undertone, ARS white, RHS 155D; buds creamy with greenish tips, colour holds well, only gently warming to yellowish white as blooms age.
Fragrance and aroma Primarily ornamental rather than a perfume rose, with a very weak, barely noticeable scent; occasional light, slightly sweet aroma detectable at close range in warm, still conditions.
Hip characteristics Limited hip set due to double flowers; where formed, small spherical orange-red hips around 8–12 mm in diameter may appear, adding discrete late-season interest.
Resistance and winter hardiness High overall disease resistance, especially to powdery mildew and black spot, with moderate rust susceptibility; fully hardy to approximately −34 to −32 °C, RHS H7, USDA zone 4a.
Horticultural recommendations Best in sunny sites with free-draining soil; ideal for groundcover, edging, beds and containers; low maintenance with minimal pruning and routine feeding, watering in prolonged dry spells.

ICY DRIFT® offers long-lasting white groundcover, compact low-care growth and resilient own-root strength; a thoughtful, gentle choice when you want reliable beauty with little effort.

Information about the videos
The video series is not a “seasonal showcase”, but makes the essence of pharmaROSA® own-root production tangible: how the plant is built, what the root system is like and how the shoots renew themselves. The footage was therefore taken at different times, showing plants at different stages of development, so mixed leaf coverage or differing growth stages may appear in the videos. This is not a “sample” of the batch delivered, but an illustration of how the technology works. The current condition of the rose available to order — typical of the given period and similar to what you can expect to receive in the parcel — is shown at the top of the product page.
