ELLEN – apricot English rose – Austin

Imagine stepping outside after rain, the air clear and fragrant, and being greeted by clusters of apricot rosettes that glow softly in the light. ‘Ellen’ is a classic English shrub rose that settles beautifully into Irish cottage borders and small city front gardens, bringing a sense of romance without demanding fussy care. Its bushy, upright habit and dark green foliage frame the large, very double blooms, which open from peachy buds and slowly fade to creamy pink. Own-root plants are naturally long-lived and resilient, giving you a rose that matures steadily and rewards you over the years, following a gentle rhythm of deeper roots in year one, stronger shoots in year two and full ornamental value by year three. Well suited to our breezy, damp climate, it copes reliably with frequent showers and cool summers, offering repeat flushes of colour whenever there is a break of sunlight. Place it where you pass daily and enjoy the strong, fruity perfume, whether in the garden or as cut stems indoors. For the best display in wetter counties, give it good drainage, a light annual mulch and a little thoughtful deadheading in summer. In a large container of at least 50 litres, this shrub rose becomes a charming, easy-care focal point by the front door or along a sunny path.

Usage options

Target areaReasoning
Sunny cottage-style bed by the front door The warm apricot, rosette-shaped flowers bring a romantic cottage feel, especially near paths or entrances where their strong, fruity scent can be enjoyed up close by everyone passing by, suiting fragrant-garden lovers and beginners.
Informal shrub border in a family garden Its bushy, upright habit and 100–150 cm height let it sit comfortably among mixed shrubs and perennials, forming a soft, flowering backdrop that works well in average-sized Irish family gardens for homeowners.
Large feature container on a sunny patio Planted in a 40–50 litre or larger pot with good drainage, it makes an eye-catching focal point, allowing those with paved or terraced spaces to enjoy an English rose look without needing a big border, ideal for busy urbanites.
Small cut-flower patch near the house The large, very double blooms with long-lasting, fruity fragrance are perfect for cutting, so a short row by the back door gives you easy access to fresh indoor arrangements throughout the season, appealing to creative hobbyists.
Romantic mixed planting with perennials The rich apricot tones blend beautifully with soft blues and mauves such as hyssop or clematis, creating an elegant, colour-coordinated scheme that looks considered yet natural, ideal for style-aware gardeners.
Sheltered, well-drained spot in wetter counties Though its flowers can bruise in heavy rain, a position with air movement and free-draining soil means the plant stays healthy and floriferous even through frequent showers and cool summers along our Atlantic coast, reassuring cautious buyers.
Low-maintenance flowering backdrop Once established on its own roots, it forms a durable, regenerating shrub that only asks for light pruning and occasional plant protection, giving reliable colour with modest effort, well suited to time-poor owners.
Long-term feature in a maturing garden The own-root form builds a stable framework over the years, regrowing well from the base and keeping its character even after harsh winters, making it a sound, long-lived choice for long-range planning planners.

Styling ideas

  • Cottage-Path Charm – Line a narrow front path with ‘Ellen’ and airy perennials like Agastache ‘Blue Fortune’ for scented strolls to the door – for nostalgic, scent-focused homeowners.
  • RomanticFrontPot – Plant a single shrub in a 50-litre terracotta pot with trailing thyme for an easy-care, romantic welcome beside city steps – for urban gardeners with limited space.
  • BreakfastView – Place ‘Ellen’ opposite a kitchen window, underplanted with low catmint, so morning coffee comes with apricot blooms and fruity fragrance – for busy families at home.
  • SoftScreen – Use several shrubs at recommended spacing as an informal flowering screen along a boundary, mingled with grasses, to gently divide areas – for privacy-seeking garden users.
  • PastelBorder – Combine with pale foxgloves, soft pink geraniums and blue clematis for a layered, pastel border that looks good through repeat flushes – for design-conscious planting enthusiasts.

Information about the videos
The video series is not a “seasonal showcase”, but makes the essence of pharmaROSA® own-root production tangible: how the plant is built, what the root system is like and how the shoots renew themselves. The footage was therefore taken at different times, showing plants at different stages of development, so mixed leaf coverage or differing growth stages may appear in the videos. This is not a “sample” of the batch delivered, but an illustration of how the technology works. The current condition of the rose available to order — typical of the given period and similar to what you can expect to receive in the parcel — is shown at the top of the product page.
