DEMOKRACIE™ – scarlet climbing rose

Step out to soft rainlight and meet DEMOKRACIE™, a scarlet climber that turns an Irish cottage wall or Dublin terrace railings into a curtain of colour with very little fuss. This dependable climber flowers generously, then returns with a plentiful second flush so your small garden keeps its glow through our shorter summers. Bred for reliable garden performance, it copes well with cool, damp air and the kind of showers and breezes that roll in from the Atlantic, provided you give it reasonable drainage and a sturdy support. Its semi-double blooms offer moderate pollinators appeal, while own-root vitality means it can re-sprout strongly after pruning or weather damage and reward you with long-term longevity. In its first year it quietly builds roots, in the second it sends up confident shoots, and by the third year it settles into its full, handsome ornamental presence along your chosen support.

Usage options

Target area Reasoning
Front garden arch or arbour Medium-height, flexible canes and repeat flowering make DEMOKRACIE™ ideal for a welcoming arch over a narrow path, giving months of scarlet colour with only occasional tying-in and pruning – a gentle pleasure for the beginner.
South- or west-facing cottage wall As a large-flowered climber reaching around 2,25–3,75 m, it quickly clothes bare walls in rich red clusters; medium maintenance and solid winter hardiness mean steady performance without specialist care, suiting the relaxed homeowner.
Dublin terraced-house railings or fence Its moderate spread and remontant blooming give a long season of colour on modest urban boundaries; disease resistance is acceptable in humid air if you provide decent drainage and a simple winter tidy, comfortable for the busy city-dweller.
Informal flowering screen between neighbours Planted at hedge spacing, its glossy foliage and dense clusters form a soft, semi-transparent screen with bright flowers that break up hard boundaries, offering privacy and cheer with just periodic pruning for the sociable family.
Mixed pollinator-friendly border backdrop Semi-double blooms in clusters offer moderate access to pollen while the long flowering period supports visiting insects; underplant with perennials to extend nectar sources, appealing to the nature-aware gardener.
Pergola or walkway with changeable weather exposure Strong canes and medium thorniness are easy to manage on a pergola, and its good colour retention means flowers stay vivid even after passing showers and bright spells, rewarding the convenience-focused owner.
Own-root long-term feature rose Supplied on its own roots, it regenerates well from the base after hard pruning or winter damage and maintains true-to-type growth for many years, making it a reassuring long-term choice for the planning buyer.
Large container on patio or small courtyard In a 40–50 litre or larger pot with good drainage, its medium maintenance needs and remontant flowering give strong impact where soil is poor or paved, an accessible way into roses for the time-pressed newcomer.

Styling ideas

  • Cottage-porch welcome – Train DEMOKRACIE™ over a simple timber arch with lavender and catmint beneath to soften the base – ideal for romantic front-garden dreamers.
  • Urban scarlet screen – Weave canes through black metal railings, underplant with hardy geraniums to cover the feet – perfect for style-conscious city residents.
  • Wildlife-friendly ribbon – Mix with Echinacea, Gaillardia and Knautia for a loose, buzzing border – suited to nature-oriented families.
  • Storybook pergola – Let its clusters hang over a narrow pergola walk, paired with shade-tolerant ferns and hostas at ground level – for those who love gentle garden drama.
  • Container statement – Grow in a 50-litre half-barrel with a fan trellis, adding trailing thyme at the rim – tailored to small-courtyard and balcony gardeners.

Technical cultivar profile
Property Data
Name and registration DEMOKRACIE™ (Registered name: Demokracie), also marketed as Blaze Improved; large-flowered climbing rose, Hybrid Wichurana background, unregistered but widely recognised in gardens.
Origin and breeding Sport of ‘Blaze’ raised by Jan Böhm in Czechoslovakia, 1935; introduced internationally via Jackson & Perkins (USA) from 1950, with enduring use as a robust climbing garden rose.
Growth and structural characteristics Vigorous climber 2,25–3,75 m high and 1,10–1,90 m wide; moderately thorny canes with glossy, dark green foliage and a naturally upright, trainable habit for arches, walls and fences.
Flower morphology Semi-double, cup-shaped clusters with 13–25 petals per bloom; medium-sized flowers around 4–7 cm, borne freely in trusses, with a plentiful repeat flush after the main early-summer display.
Colour data and phenology Vivid scarlet-red blooms (ARS DR; RHS 46A outer, 46B inner); buds deep scarlet, opening fiery red with radiant sheen and only moderate fading, retaining strong colour even in bright summer sun.
Fragrance and aroma Fragrance is very weak and barely noticeable, allowing focus on colour and form rather than scent; chosen mainly for visual impact and garden structure rather than for perfumed displays.
Hip characteristics Forms moderate quantities of small, spherical hips around 10–14 mm across; orange-red when ripe, adding a light decorative accent and seasonal wildlife interest in late season.
Resistance and winter hardiness Hardy to about −26 to −23 °C (H7; USDA 5b); medium resistance to black spot, powdery mildew and rust, benefiting from good air circulation and routine monitoring in damp climates.
Horticultural recommendations Best on supports such as pergolas, fences, arches and walls; space 1,4–2,5 m apart, in well-drained soil, with regular watering during prolonged drought and light annual pruning to renew flowering wood.

DEMOKRACIE™ offers vivid scarlet repeat flowering, reliable climbing structure and the long-term resilience of an own-root rose, making it a thoughtful choice for those planning a relaxed, enduring garden display.

Information about the videos
The video series is not a “seasonal showcase”, but makes the essence of pharmaROSA® own-root production tangible: how the plant is built, what the root system is like and how the shoots renew themselves. The footage was therefore taken at different times, showing plants at different stages of development, so mixed leaf coverage or differing growth stages may appear in the videos. This is not a “sample” of the batch delivered, but an illustration of how the technology works. The current condition of the rose available to order — typical of the given period and similar to what you can expect to receive in the parcel — is shown at the top of the product page.
