ALCHYMIST® – apricot rambler climbing rose - Kordes

Step outside after a shower and let the Alchymist rose pull You into its glowing, changeable blooms – rich apricot, peach and butter-gold that slowly “turn to gold” against glossy mid‑green foliage. This once‑a‑year spectacle is intensely fragrant, perfuming the whole corner of an Irish cottage garden or a small Dublin front garden with a fruity, honeyed sweetness. Planted as an own‑root shrub, it offers reassuring longevity, reshooting reliably from the base and restoring its structure even after rough winters or a hard prune. Give it sun, a sturdy support and free‑draining soil that copes well with our winter wet and humidity, and it will respond with years of impact. In a 2‑litre pot it is easy to handle and plant, settling in gently as roots in year one, shoots in year two, and full garden presence by year three, turning everyday paths and walls into romantic, softly lit walkways.

Usage options

Target area Reasoning
Cottage-style house wall or sunny gable Best where its strong honeyed scent and colour-changing flowers can be enjoyed up close from doors and windows, trained on wires or trellis against a sun-facing wall for a traditional cottage look – perfect for the Irish cottage romantic
Feature arch or pergola over a garden path Creates a once-a-summer tunnel of apricot and gold, ideal over a path You walk daily, with dense foliage and long canes forming a leafy ceiling that makes light rain and soft light feel welcoming – suited to the mood-loving stroller
Screening along a fence in a family garden Its vigorous height and generous spread provide a living privacy screen, softening boundaries and breaking up views of sheds or neighbouring houses while still leaving ground space free for play – helpful for the space-conscious homeowner
Statement rose for a Dublin terraced front garden One well-placed plant gives real kerb appeal, framing the doorway with a cascade of apricot blooms, working especially well with painted railings, brick, pebble dash and classic tiled steps – ideal for the style-aware city dweller
Large container on balcony or patio (40–60 litres) In a generous pot with a strong obelisk or mini-arch, Alchymist brings vertical colour and scent to paved spaces; own-root growth helps it recover if winter or pruning cuts back top growth – reassuring for the busy balcony gardener
Romantic mixed border backdrop Planted at the back of a bed, it rises behind perennials like lady’s mantle and crocosmia, its warm tones catching the evening sun so the whole border glows in our soft, Atlantic-tinged light and frequent showers – perfect for the soft-light admirer
Freestanding specimen on a rustic support Given a sturdy pole, tripod or obelisk in the lawn, it can be grown almost as a small flowering tree, drawing the eye from the house and creating a destination point for a short, fragrant garden walk – appealing to the feature-seeking planner
Traditional park or large country garden planting Suited to more spacious plots where its once-a-year display can be allowed to shine, with room for long canes and regular, thoughtful maintenance in a site chosen for good air movement and drainage – best for the dedicated rose enthusiast

Styling ideas

  • COTTAGE PORCH FRAME – Train Alchymist around a front-door arch and under upstairs windows, pairing with lady’s mantle and terracotta pots for a soft, welcoming cottage feel – for traditional-home lovers
  • GOLDEN RAINWALK – Let it spill over a pergola above a gravel path, with verbena and ornamental grasses below, creating a romantic stroll even on showery evenings – for mood-focused walkers
  • URBAN STATEMENT – In a small Dublin front, grow it on black railings or a painted trellis, underplanted with low evergreen shrubs to keep structure in winter – for design-conscious city dwellers
  • RUSTIC OBELISK – Place a wooden or metal obelisk in lawn or gravel and let Alchymist climb, surrounded by loose perennials for a painterly, informal look – for relaxed country gardeners
  • PATIO SCENT CORNER – Use a 50–60 litre container with a compact arch to create an intimate, high-scent seating nook, adding candles and soft cushions for evening use – for fragrance-first relaxers

Technical cultivar profile
Parameter Data
Name and registration Trade name Alchymist® Climbing rose Kordes, exhibition name ‘Alchymist’; large-flowered rambler and shrub-type climbing rose for garden, landscape and specimen use, unregistered but long established in cultivation.
Origin and breeding Bred by Reimer Kordes, W. Kordes’ Söhne, Germany, from ‘Golden Glow’ × Rosa eglanteria hybrid; introduced in 1956 and still valued for its romantic colour blend and strong scent.
Growth and structural characteristics Vigorous climbing habit reaching about 300–450 cm high and 150–250 cm wide, densely thorned canes, mid-green glossy foliage, weak self-cleaning so spent very double blooms may need manual removal.
Flower morphology Very double rosette flowers, usually solitary on the stem, 7–10 cm across with over 40 petals; once-flowering, producing one main, abundant summer flush rather than repeat blooms through the season.
Colour data and phenology Apricot blend with golden-yellow outer petals and deeper peach to orange centres; colour changes as flowers age, softening to buttery yellow and creamy-brown tones, with deeper hues in cooler, gentler sun.
Fragrance and aroma Very strong, rich perfume noticeable from a distance, combining fruity and honeyed notes in a classic old-rose style; ideal where scented impact is wanted near paths, doors, terraces or seating areas.
Hip characteristics Fruit set is typically light, producing occasional small ovoid orange-red hips around 12–18 mm in diameter; hips are decorative but sparse and not a major ornamental feature of this cultivar.
Resistance and winter hardiness Hardy to about −32 to −29 °C (H7, USDA 4b, Swedish zone 5); moderate heat tolerance needing watering in long dry spells; disease sensitivity requires attentive monitoring for rust, black spot and mildew.
Horticultural recommendations Prefers full sun and fertile, free-draining soil; allow space for height and spread, support canes securely, and prune after flowering; in wet, mild climates provide good air flow and regular disease management.

ALCHYMIST® – apricot rambler climbing rose - Kordes rewards a sunny, well-drained spot with one breathtakingly fragrant display, long-lived own-root growth and impressive height, making it a thoughtful choice for characterful Irish gardens.

Information about the videos
The video series is not a “seasonal showcase”, but makes the essence of pharmaROSA® own-root production tangible: how the plant is built, what the root system is like and how the shoots renew themselves. The footage was therefore taken at different times, showing plants at different stages of development, so mixed leaf coverage or differing growth stages may appear in the videos. This is not a “sample” of the batch delivered, but an illustration of how the technology works. The current condition of the rose available to order — typical of the given period and similar to what you can expect to receive in the parcel — is shown at the top of the product page.
